Tucked away just 8 kilometers southeast of the world-renowned Konark Sun Temple, the ancient Buddhist site of Kuruma offers a serene and insightful window into Odisha’s spiritual past. Unlike the grandeur of Konark, Kuruma’s understated charm lies in its peaceful atmosphere and its deep historical roots. Unearthed through the efforts of a dedicated local teacher, Brajabandhu Das, and later excavated officially between 1971 and 1975, Kuruma has revealed remnants of a Buddhist monastery, complete with sculptures and structures that date back to at least the 11th century. This site reflects a unique blend of religious influences, showcasing Vajrayana Buddhist iconography alongside local worship practices.

Kuruma remains an active site of cultural significance and is maintained for heritage preservation. Visitors are encouraged to respect the local customs and the sanctity of the sculptures, which continue to be worshipped by the surrounding community.

One of the most fascinating aspects of Kuruma is its collection of sculptures housed in a small shrine on-site. These include a crowned Seated Buddha in the Bhumisparsha Mudra, a Padmapani Avalokiteshvara, and representations of Yamantaka Heruka and Tribikram, all of which are revered by the local population as “Yamadharma.” The layout of the monastic complex—with twelve blocks surrounding a central courtyard—mirrors traditional Buddhist architectural norms, while the discovery of household items such as pottery, beads, and ovens suggests a thriving, inhabited center of learning and devotion. The site not only sheds light on Odisha’s Buddhist past but also suggests its role in ancient maritime trade routes, offering scholars and visitors alike a rich tapestry of religious and cultural convergence.
